Types of Waste

An airport site generates various types of waste.

Non-hazardous waste: These are waste materials that do not exhibit any hazardous characteristics. They include household waste (DIB), paper waste, cardboard waste, wood waste, textile waste, etc.

Hazardous waste: These are waste materials that possess one or more hazardous properties represented by one or more danger symbols (explosive, flammable, environmentally hazardous, toxic, carcinogenic, etc.). If not properly managed, these wastes can cause harm to humans and the environment (e.g., chemicals, batteries, contaminated packaging).

« Please note that placing hazardous waste in a non-hazardous waste container contaminates the entire container. The contents are then considered entirely hazardous waste ».

Hazardous waste produced at the airport includes maintenance waste (used oils, oil/fuel filters, contaminated cloths and packaging, aerosols, batteries), batteries, fluorescent tubes and lamps, and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).

Waste Management

Cherbourg Maupertus Airport actively participates in the proper management of these wastes and ensures their valorization through specific arrangements and actions. Each waste type undergoes specific treatments in compliance with the applicable regulations.

Actions implemented at the airport:

  1. Valorization of non-hazardous waste:

Recycling of paper/cardboard, plastic bottles, and organic waste (valorization of over 10 tons of paper/cardboard per year). Collection of green waste resulting from platform maintenance by local farmers. Use of rechargeable batteries.

  1. Valorization of hazardous waste: Establishing appropriate treatment channels for different types of hazardous waste generated (used oils, contaminated materials, tubes and lamps, aerosols, etc.).
  2. Waste separation awareness campaigns for the platform's personnel.
  3. Regular inspections to ensure proper waste management.

The airport ensures traceability of waste from collection to disposal.
